Widow Holly and her son Ben arrive to her mother's new workplace. When they meet neighbor Nick, Ben believes that Nick is Santa Claus and keeps trying to set up Holly and Nick to get his wish that his dead father would come back. He sends Holly and Nick secret-admirer letters "from each other." When they meet they figure out that they were set up. Figuring Ben did it, Holly lectures her son on how some people aren't meant to be together. While Ben and Nick play hockey, a post truck hits Ben's dog Oscar; at the vet's, Holly blames Nick for the incident. Many scenes later they make up and kiss. Nick turns out to be Santa in the end with Holly and Ben watching in awe. Nick flies into the sky in a sleigh guided by reindeer. The veterinarian comes to the house with Oscar and announces that the dog will be fine. At the end, Holly becomes the veterinarian.
